Are you intelligent or just clever?

“When did you get so clever?”
“When I realized I wasn’t as clever as I thought.”

John Connolly

How do you know if you’re intelligent or just clever? IQ test is a very common way to check intelligence. There are countless free apps available on the internet to test your IQ, did you ever try to give an intelligence test?

Collins English Dictionary defines intelligence and cleverness as “the ability to think, reason, and understand instead of doing things automatically or by instinct.” And “someone who shows the ability to learn and understand things quickly and easily is a clever person.”

What do you perceive from it? Do you prefer to be intelligent or smart?

Intelligence is something that is inherited, there is no escaping from the fact that you are born with it. It cannot be taught, learned, or practiced.

There are billions of tremendously intelligent people alive who don’t prefer to publicize the fact that they are knowledgeable. Call it modesty or good conduct, but they are bright and it comes naturally to them. Only such people can freely live their lives without deliberately drawing attention to themselves.

Do you wonder Einstein was a school dropout? He was named “Man of the Century” by Times Magazine but was he really bad at studies?

Intelligence is something that is never easily spotted, simply getting an A in a test also receiving a medical or engineering diploma doesn’t make you intelligent. Call it a myth, confusion, or whatever, but Albert Einstein who made us truly understand our world was never a poor student. He never failed Math but pursued his passion to study Physics.

As per Ripley’s believe it or not, the only problem was with his behavior; he was not an attentive, well-behaved, or a successful one. He did face a hard time finding a good job but why not think this way that ‘he was a chosen one.’

Albert Einstein was a true genius. He identified his intelligence sort of ‘programmed his own brain’ as per Falk in 2009. Although, he was an average student he possessed an original way of thinking – a kind of a magic touch that he had.

“I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.”

Albert Einstein

Why is that some people are best at math, some at sports, and others at reading, painting, singing, or playing an instrument? For the reason that each one of you possesses own motivations and talents that you either develop in the early stage of life or on the way. Howard Gardner deducted the conclusion in one of his famed books called “The Theory of Multiple Intelligences.”

Did you know that not just one, two, or three but there are 9 types of intelligence as per Howard? He said, “I believe that the brain has evolved over millions of years to be responsive to different kinds of content in the world. Language content, musical content, spatial content, numerical content, etc.

Those nine types of intelligence are:

  1. Spatial intelligence
  2. Interpersonal intelligence
  3. Naturalistic intelligence
  4. Logical-mathematical intelligence
  5. Musical intelligence
  6. Intra-personal intelligence
  7. Linguistic intelligence
  8. Existential intelligence
  9. Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence

Struggles of Being a Highly Intelligent Person

It is believed that highly intelligent people have their lives settled in front of them because they are best at several things, for example, they don’t have to struggle much to pass exams because they can grasp information easily, great at giving presentations, know a lot, etc.

While the above may seem pleasing but do you also know that intelligent people are quirky? Thinking about what registers them as weird? It can be eating habits, behaviors, body language, slow speakers but have a loud mind, do not like to take part in boring conversations, etc.

Along with all the weird habits they possess, there are some struggles that a highly intelligent person faces in his life, for example:

  1. Trouble fitting in
  2. Pressured to succeed
  3. Bad at friendships
  4. Suffer analysis paralysis
  5. Socially awkward
  6. Get bored easily
  7. Difficulty falling in love
  8. Perfectionists
  9. Feel lonely
  10. Not very expressive
  11. Widely misunderstood
  12. Overthinkers
  13. Underestimate their true potential
